It’s not usually a good idea to run straight at a gun. Or glowing hand, in this case.
Can’t remember which film it was (Hunt for Red October, possibly) where the ‘good guys’ aimed their sub at the incoming torpedo so that it would impact before reaching “minimum safe distance” and therefore the warhead wouldn’t have armed itself yet. It might even have been Star Trek VI, and therefore the Enterprise not a sub.
